The RDMGC is a strategic sub-committee of the University Research Committee (URC) established to provide strategic oversight and governance for the management of research data generated within UCT. Comprising representatives from the DVC R&I, the Research Office, academic faculties, ICTS, and RC&I, the RDMGC ensures that institutional policies align with national and international standards and frameworks governing research data.

Purpose

The purpose of the Research Data Management Governance Committee is to provide authoritative guidance, oversight, and strategic direction to ensure best practices in the management, stewardship, and sharing of research data across UCT. The RDMGC seeks to uphold institutional, national, and international standards of research integrity, ethics, and data compliance, thereby supporting the university’s research excellence and innovation objectives.

The RDMGC aims to

  • promote a culture of responsible research data management and sharing in alignment with open science principles;
  • provide strategic oversight of the university’s Research Data Management framework, including policies and procedures;
  • facilitate compliance with legal, ethical, and funder requirements related to research data;
  • support capacity building and training initiatives in research data management across faculties and departments;
  • enable effective integration of data governance within broader institutional research infrastructure and initiatives.
